The Manhattan Beach Education Foundation Endowment Professional Advisory council is made up of professionals who provide a collection of expertise in estate planning and various planned giving opportunities.
Geoff Bremer is Certified Public Accountant heading his own firm, G.M. Bremer & Associates. He served for many years on MBEF’s board prior to joining the MBEF Endowment Board. Geoff received a bachelor’s degree in economics from UCLA and a master’s degree in taxation from Golden Gate University. He is a member of the California Society of Certified Public Accountants, a past member of its board of directors and a Past President of its 10,000-member Los Angeles Chapter. He is also Past Chair of the Los Angeles Chapter Taxation Committee and a member of the Chapter’s Estate Planning Committee. He is also a Rotarian. Geoff represents both individuals and businesses, with a focus on estate and income tax planning matters. In addition, he has had considerable experience structuring business transactions, including sales, acquisitions, and both taxable and nontaxable mergers. He and his wife Chris have two children who have attended MBUSD schools.
Chris is a board-certified specialist in estate planning, trust, and probate law with over 20 years of legal experience. His practice includes all facets of trusts and estates, and he represents families, individuals, professional trustees, conservators, guardians, and beneficiaries. He is a partner in the firm Carico Johnson Toomey LLP. Mr. Carico graduated with a J.D. cum laude, from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, where he was a member of the Order of the Coif. He obtained his B.A in economics from Occidental College. His previous affiliations include Carico Toomey & Associates LLP (2007–2008), Davis & Carico LLP (1996–2007), Law Offices of Christopher D. Carico (1990–1996), and Mullen & Henzell (1989–1990). Chris is a 1979 graduate of Mira Costa High School. Chris and his wife, Kelli, live in Manhattan Beach and have three children who have recently graduated from Mira Costa.
Jeff Eisen is a partner in the firm Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp LLP. Mr. Eisen represents individuals and families in the full range of estate planning, including everything from “basic” estate planning, (wills, living trusts, and powers of attorney), to complex planning to the transfer of wealth while minimizing or eliminating estate tax, gift tax and generation-skipping transfer tax. He counsels beneficiaries and fiduciaries (executors and trustees) regarding the administration of estates and trusts, including the preparation and filing of federal estate tax returns. Mr. Eisen represents individuals and charities as beneficiaries of potentially troubled, disputed and contested estates, working and negotiating to reach a settlement without litigation, but shepherding clients through mediation and litigation of these disputes where necessary. He also counsels individuals and institutions serving as fiduciaries to carry out their duties successfully and without liability to beneficiaries. Jeff and his wife, Andrea, live in Manhattan Beach. Their two children are Mira Costa Mustangs, Class of 2012 and 2015.
Jennifer Honey founded her own law practice which focuses on estate planning; estate and gift tax planning; probate; trust administration; charitable planning; family business succession planning; as well as will contests, trust, and probate litigation in 2008. Prior to beginning her practice, Ms. Honey was an associate for the law firm of Reish & Luftman as well as a consultant for the Family Wealth Planning Group of the Los Angeles office of Arthur Andersen. Ms. Honey is recognized by the California State Bar as a certified specialist in the field of estate planning. Her experience includes estate, tax and charitable planning; creation of private foundations; trust planning; family business succession planning; creating and advising family limited partnerships and limited liability companies; post-mortem planning; planning with qualified plan assets; life insurance tax planning; and administration of probates, trusts and estates.
Ms. Honey is a graduate of the University of Southern California and received her Juris Doctorate from University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law. She received a Masters of Law degree in Estate Planning and Estate and Gift Taxation from the University of Miami Law School in 1996, where she served as chairperson for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program. Ms. Honey is an adjunct faculty member of the graduate tax studies program at Loyola Law School. Jennifer and her husband, Kent, have four children and live in Manhattan Beach.
Jim Schlager is a principal with Moss Adams Wealth Advisors, has more than 25 years of experience as a wealth advisor. Working with business owners, families and individuals, Jim coordinates their financial needs and portfolios to help them meet well-defined personal and business goals. By combining technical expertise and management skills, and working in a time sensitive manner, Jim guides clients in making critical financial decisions. For those who are business owners, he offers financial insight to help their businesses run more efficiently. When it comes to financial planning, Jim helps clients integrate their personal and business investments, insurance, real estate holdings, philanthropic giving, as well as their income and estate taxes. Jim lives and works in Manhattan Beach with his wife, Lisa, and their two children. As an active, longtime member of the community, he is an ardent supporter of various Manhattan Beach educational initiatives and causes—including MBEF.
Bill Weintraub is an accomplished tax lawyer who has been practicing for over 30 years most recently with the firm Elkins Kalt Weintraub Reuben Gartside, LLP. He specializes in representing clients in the areas of estate planning, transactional tax planning and tax controversy. Mr. Weintraub’s estate plan clients include wealthy individuals and families, professional athletes, entertainers and business owners. Some estate plan clients require sophisticated trusts and transactions to carry out their goals while other clients require relatively straight forward plans. In all cases, Mr. Weintraub continuously draws on his extensive experience to arrange for a smooth and efficient transfer of property from one generation to the next. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and received his J.D. from Rutgers University. For many years, Bill and his wife, Susan, have been actively involved in the Manhattan Wine Auction benefitting MBEF and its Endowment Fund. They reside in Manhattan Beach.
